BRIDGEPORT - A firefighter was injured and six people were evacuated when fire roared through a multi-family home on the city’s East End Monday evening.
Battalion Fire Chief Michael Caldaroni said the firefighter suffered heat exhaustion battling the blaze and was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital for observation.
The fire began about 5 p.m. in the two and a half-story house on Wilmot Avenue.
Caldaroni said they received numerous calls of a roof on fire at the address but when firefighters rolled up they found the second floor fully engulfed in flames.
“It was a serious, quick moving fire,” Caldaroni said.
Within a few minutes after they started to fight the fire Caldaroni said firefighters were ordered out of the structure. “The fire was moving so swiftly we were concerned about the danger to firefighters,” he explained.
He said the six adult occupants of the building managed to get out safely with one man leaping from a second-story window.
“There was significant damage to the structure, no one will be living there anymore,” Caldaroni said.
He said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
